October News

Happy October!

We are looking forward to our first school trip of the year to Chappell Farm tomorrow. If you have been selected as a trip volunteer, you have been notified in your child’s communication book. Thank you to everyone who offered to volunteer, we will keep you in mind for our next event. We’d like to ask our volunteers to ride the school bus with our classes (if you are not entering with the class as a volunteer, you will be expected to pay the entrance fee). Please remember to dress your child according to the weather tomorrow, as we will be going rain or shine. The children will have a quick snack before we leave the school at about 9:30. We will have lunch after we return to school and will be back in time for those who have ordered pizza.

Sister Catherine Donnelly School is currently collecting food for our We Scare Hunger Food Drive. Thank you to those families who have already sent in food-we appreciate any donations you can offer.

We have been working on learning classroom routines and school expectations, recognizing and writing our names (SKs are starting to work on writing their last names), simple patterning games, and songs/poems with actions. We have practiced several fire drills and code red drills. Our class did a great job participating in our Thanksgiving Mass as well as our first whole school Good News Assembly. It has been a very busy few weeks!

There are lots of things happening in October. The SKs (in Mrs. Sadlon/Panico’s class) will begin bringing their reading folders home this month (JKs start a little later in the year), we had our first visit from the Rosary Apostolate on the 11th, our kindergarten classes will be having a Pyjama Day on Friday, October 27th, there is a P.A. Day on the 30th, and we will celebrate Halloween on the 31st by wearing Black and Orange (no costumes please) to school. Phew!

Our school has a subscription to a great Math games website called Mathletics. Please check it out and use your child's login card that was sent home a week ago in their communication bag. The children can practice math skills at their level and earn points towards Mathletics award certificates.

Please label ALL outdoor clothing. We can't keep track of everything! Help your child practice putting their hat inside their coat sleeves when they take it off (prevents possible spread of head lice). We have small baskets above our coat hooks for them to keep their mittens in.

-Library day is Friday (Sadlon/Panico), and Wednesday (Lawlor-MacDonald/Salisbury). Please help your child remember to return their book on those days so that they are able to select another.

-Please do not combine cash payments for different school things (e.g., pizza orders and trip forms) or put several things all on the same cheque. This makes our bookkeeping very difficult (imagine the time used up when this happens with several students and with many different types of payments).

-Please check again to see that your child is able to open/close their lunch containers/water bottles. Many of the children cannot get into their food by themselves and this limits their independence greatly.

-Please allow your child to dress him/herself at home-we need to practice! Cold weather is coming up and it takes considerably more time when the children need lots of assistance. Practice the order in which we put winter clothing on. Please see the Let’s Get Dressed and Let’s Eat links on our classroom website for suggestions.

-We are already getting our hands messy! Thank you for the excellent response to our play dough schedule!

Thank you again for all that you do (and all that you have done) to help make your children's transition into the new school year a smooth one. We really appreciate all of your support.
